The people of Fort Liberté have many medical needs due to malnutrition, dehydration, accidents and infections.  Many deaths could be prevented with adequate medical care.  Often, children die of illnesses which could be cured in the U.S.  Penicillin can still work miracles in Ft. Liberte, when it’s available.  High blood pressures and diseases like diabetes, glaucoma, AIDS, malaria, typhoid, hepatitis, and sickle-cell anemia abound.  There is a government-run hospital in Fort Liberte but it is ill equipped, has few medications, and has a pay-up-front policy.

The Ebenezer Medical Clinic was dedicated on March 30, 2005.  Supported year ‘round by the Friends of Fort Liberte, this clinic offers basic medical care to all  people in the area.  It monitors the care of the orphans and other sponsored children.  The clinic is manned by an RN who was one of the first eight FFL sponsored children, and a long-time, experienced LPN who could teach the doctors much.  A physician from the local hospital comes in several mornings each week and when needed for consults or emergencies.  A small basic lab is run by a Haitian lab tech.

In years past, medical teams from the U.S. and Canada worked in old, condemned buildings without lights or running water.  They set up with what they could carry in and it all folded up when they left.  Mission teams now have a clean, secure, and efficient workplace for the care they provide to the thousands in Fort Liberté.  At the end of their stay, instead of packing up the cases of medications and supplies they brought in, they can leave them to carry the clinic until the next team visits.  Medical records are kept so that successive medical teams can develop patient histories and provide consistent care.

FFL through donations, provides $100 a day to support the staff and operation of the clinic.  Another $500 is sent each month for medications.  Of course, much more is needed, and sent, when available.  Donations for clinic are always welcome.  Individuals and groups are urged to sponsor A day at the Clinic annually for $100 each.
