Currently, nearly 500 children from Ft. Liberte, Haiti receive support through the Friends of Fort Liberte Haitian Children’s Fund. Most of these children are sponsored for $25 per month by families all across the United States and Canada. One hundred percent of all sponsorship money goes directly to the child's family. Designed as a scholarship program to keep children in school, the money enables the child to attend school, provides for a school uniform and school supplies. Sponsorship also supplements the family's income to help provide food, shelter and clothing.
How do I know my sponsored child is benefiting from my support?
Each year, dedicated volunteers travel to Ft. Liberte and visit with each sponsored child. The sponsored children and their parents are asked many questions about the child's health, living conditions, and progress in school. The children are photographed, measured, and screened for conditions such as malnutrition and skin infections. Those children who appear ill are sent to the clinic. When she gets home, the child sponsorship coordinator enters new information and pictures into her data base and sends updated information to each sponsor. She may also be contacted through any FFL address for further information.
How do I get started?
To sponsor a child, you may fill out an online contact form to get started, or send your first month's sponsorship of $25 along with your name, address, phone number and e-mail address to the address given below. If it matters to you, you may specify whether you prefer to sponsor a boy or girl. You will be contacted by the sponsorship coordinator and will receive a packet of information when you become a sponsor.
As you may imagine, $25 does not buy as much as it did when the sponsorship program began in 1986. Many sponsors send $5 or $10 extra each month to help their families. Special gifts or donations for medical needs or extra expenses can also be sent through FFL. All donations are tax deductible.
At any given time, there are between 50 and 100 names on the FFL sponsorship waiting list. Each family lives in hope that someone will care enough to help. Sponsors are committed for only as long as they wish or are able to continue. FFL requests that sponsors notify us if they must discontinue support so that children are not lost between sponsors.
